The potential for meat production in the northern, largely unused territories remains vastly underestimated. Vegetable protein is produced in high latitudes in just as large quantities as in low latitudes, and it's simply not utilized.
Today, humanity has acquired new tools for animal breeding. Using them to create animals for high latitudes could be a good example of the potential for creating animals for other planets.
I am actively promoting the idea of creating animals for high latitudes, as I understand exactly what is needed.
We need animals capable of gaining weight in extreme cold and under intense pressure from midges and horseflies. Animals capable of foraging for food from under the snow.
We have a wide range of animals that demonstrate this is entirely possible.
First, musk oxen.
Second, reindeer and moose.
All of these animals have the following disadvantages:
1. They interact poorly with humans.
2. They have insufficient growth rates.
3. The meat is of insufficient quality.
There are three directions in this area.
1. Improving existing wild animals and imparting to them the traits of cattle.
2. Improving cattle by imparting to them the traits of these high-latitude animals.
3. Creating entirely new animals.
The same applies to the birds.
Russia has the capacity to carry out this work, but no one is interested, so there is neither political will nor investors. Despite this, Russia has approximately 11 million square kilometers of northern climate land that is practically unused. There are also vast territories in Canada and Alaska. Greenland and northern Scandinavia can also be added to this list.
